Where to See Holiday Lights in Seattle

When the sun sets early, Seattle finds plenty of ways to brighten the evening. Boats glow on the water, trees sparkle across Seattle Center and larger-than-life lanterns turn a neighborhood outing into something extraordinary.

Whether you’re planning a holiday date night, gathering friends or starting a new family tradition, here are some of our favorite ways to experience holiday lights in Seattle.

1. See the Lights From the Water at the Christmas Ship™ Festival

Best for: A classic Seattle holiday experience with lights, music and time on the water

Some holiday lights are best seen with a little sea breeze. Our Christmas Ship™ Festival brings the celebration to the water aboard the Spirit of Seattle™, decorated with hundreds of sparkling white lights.

Step aboard the official Christmas Ship™ for a family-friendly cruise with Santa and a live community choir. As the boat reaches its scheduled waterfront stop, the choir’s performance carries across the water to neighboring boats and people gathered on shore.

For an adults-only evening, choose the 21+ Follow Boat. You’ll cruise aboard a separate, decorated Argosy vessel, with views of the official Christmas Ship™, themed festivities and drinks available for purchase. During the performance stop, head outside to hear the choir broadcast from the Christmas Ship™.

Want to see a whole procession of lights? Make the Parade of Boats on December 11, 2026, part of your holiday plans. Decorated vessels gather on Lake Union before traveling through the Fremont Cut.

2. Wander Through Seattle Christmas Market

Best for: A holiday date night with lights, festive bites and gift shopping

There’s something especially inviting about holiday lights when you can enjoy them with a warm drink in hand. At Seattle Christmas Market, European-inspired holiday traditions meet a distinctly Seattle setting at Seattle Center.

Spend an evening exploring artisan stalls, choosing seasonal food and drinks, and taking in the festive décor and live entertainment. Leave time for a stroll through Lovers’ Lane and a few photos together before picking out a gift for someone on your list.

For 2026, the market runs November 20 through December 26. Admission is ticketed, so plan ahead before heading out.

Want to turn your visit into a bigger holiday outing? Pair the market with a Christmas Ship™ Festival sailing on another evening, or check departure locations and timing before combining both in one day.

3. Explore WildLanterns at Woodland Park Zoo

Best for: Families, photo opportunities and an immersive evening walk

For a different take on holiday lights, head to WildLanterns at Woodland Park Zoo. Illuminated animal and landscape displays transform the grounds into a nighttime walking experience, with larger-than-life lanterns giving you plenty of reasons to stop along the way.

Make this the main event of your evening so you have time to explore without rushing. It’s an easy choice for families looking for a festive outing or friends who want something a little different from their usual holiday gathering.

WildLanterns runs November 13, 2026, through January 17, 2027, with select closure dates and designated 21+ evenings. Check the calendar when choosing your tickets.

4. Take a Holiday Stroll Through Seattle Center

Best for: A flexible outing with twinkling lights and room to wander

You don’t need a packed itinerary to enjoy a festive evening. During Winterfest, Seattle Center dresses its campus with illuminated trees and seasonal light features, giving a familiar Seattle gathering place an extra glow.

Take a walk through the grounds, enjoy the decorations and check the Winterfest calendar for entertainment during your visit. It’s also a natural addition to an evening at Seattle Christmas Market, which is a separately ticketed attraction on campus.

5. Watch the Christmas Ship™ Glow From Shore

Best for: A free community outing by the water

You don’t have to board a boat to enjoy the Christmas Ship™ Festival. At scheduled public waterfront stops, you can gather on shore to watch the illuminated ship and hear the choir perform across the water.

Choose your location from the current onshore performance schedule, bundle up and arrive early enough to settle in before the ship appears. Bring a flashlight for navigating after dark and make an evening of sharing the tradition with friends, family or neighbors.

It’s a simple way to experience one of Seattle’s most distinctive holiday sights: a glowing ship, music on the water and a community coming together along the shoreline.

The best holiday outings give you time to enjoy being together. Pick a light display, leave room for something warm to drink and build an evening around the people you want to celebrate with.
