Olympic Sculpture Park is one of the most underrated outdoor spaces in the city. It sits on the waterfront near Belltown as the Seattle Art Museum’s outdoor extension, and admission is always free. Large, striking sculptures are scattered along walking paths that gradually slope down toward Elliott Bay.
Late afternoon is the best time to visit. Grab a coffee or a glass of wine on the way in and take your time walking through. The path eventually opens up to wide views of the bay, the ferries crossing back and forth, and on a clear day, the Olympic Mountains across the water.
Catch a Show
Seattle’s performing arts scene tends to get overshadowed by the city’s other draws, but there’s a lot worth seeing on any given week.

A bookstore afternoon is one of the better things you can do in Seattle on a rainy day, and there are a lot of rainy days.
Elliott Bay Book Company on Capitol Hill is a large independent bookstore with a cafe that’s built for staying a while. One way to make it a date: wander separately for half an hour, each pick a book you think the other person should read, then swap and talk about your choices over coffee.
For something with a different feel, Twice Sold Tales on Capitol Hill has resident cats that wander the aisles and a tightly packed used book selection worth digging through.
Take the Bainbridge Island Ferry
The ferry leaves from downtown and gets you across in about 35 minutes. From there, the afternoon takes care of itself: walk Winslow’s main street, split a tasting flight at one of the local wineries, find dinner, and catch the return ferry at dusk. The ride back, with the Seattle skyline lit up across the water, is the kind of moment that tends to stay with you.
Kerry Park at Night
Kerry Park is small, free, and home to the view of Seattle you’ve probably seen on a postcard: Space Needle in the foreground, downtown behind it, and on clear nights, Mount Rainier visible to the south.
It works well in the late evening, when the city lights are on but the sky still has a little color in it. Bring a blanket if it’s chilly.
